Speaker

Greg Renkas, Executive Director of NEOPAT (Northeast Ohio Foundation for Patriotism), provided an overview of NEOPAT’s mission to assist veterans and military families across 20 counties in Northeast Ohio. Since 2011, NEOPAT has distributed over $4.5 million to support veterans through initiatives focused on honoring service and enhancing veterans' lives. The organization’s efforts are organized into four main pillars: emergency assistance, mental wellness, community engagement, and remembrance programs.

  1. Emergency Assistance: Making up 60-70% of NEOPAT’s funding, this program helps veterans and families cover essential needs such as housing, utilities, and medical expenses through a streamlined application process.

  2. Mental Wellness: NEOPAT provides alternative therapies for veterans dealing with “invisible wounds,” including outdoor recreational therapy, arts and music therapy, and partnerships with programs like equine therapy and "Modern Warrior LIVE," an arts initiative addressing veterans’ experiences.

  3. Community Engagement: NEOPAT partners with local organizations and companies, including the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Cavaliers, for events like salute-to-service games, community initiatives, and housing upgrades for veterans.

  4. Remembrance Programs: Honoring Gold Star families and fallen service members, NEOPAT holds memorial events, participates in Wreaths Across America, and recognizes individuals through the Charles Kirby Wilcox Honoree Award.

Renkas shared a personal story illustrating NEOPAT’s commitment: he described helping a Vietnam veteran, Carl, overcome financial hardship after facing a debt error that had drastically reduced his benefits. With NEOPAT’s ongoing support, Carl recovered his benefits and regained financial stability.

NEOPAT urges community members to help spread awareness of its mission to reach more veterans in need. Information about the organization’s work and upcoming events, including a gala, Topgolf event, and clambake, is available at https://neopat.org/news/ or you can email him at grenkas@neopat.org.
